Communication skills for science graduates

We are a story telling species. Learning how to communicate complex ideas using narrative techniques, creative tools and audience focus will revolutionise the way in which you connect your ideas to the world. This workshop has been specifically designed for emerging scientists. It will take you through the key principles and techniques for effectively communicating complex concepts with a target audience.  Whatever career path you take, communication skills will be key to your success.

Workshop topics include:

Science Communication Context

• Audience Focus – how to identify your target audience and tailor your communication to their needs.
• Key Messages – How to identify and simplify your key messages

Science Communication Tools

• Metaphors, Analogies and Personification – how to explain complex concepts in creative ways.
• Stories – learn the basics of narrative structure and how to craft a compelling story about a science topic.
• Emotion – how to use emotion to connect with and motivate your audience

If you have a science communication project that you’re working on or a competition that you intend to enter then bring your ideas along. There will be an opportunity to work on your project, brainstorm with others and receive feedback.  We will be using the Comvita Science Challenge as a focus for some of the exercises and encourage participants to enter this exciting science communication competition.
